The New Zealand marine industry builds more boats per capita than any other country in the world. The major concentration of marine industries is in the Auckland Region servicing national and international clients.

Annual turnover in the Industry was estimated at $2.4 billion in 2005 and is forecasted to increase to $3.16 billion by 2020. The Auckland marine industry accounts for 60% of the total turnover

The Marine Industry Association (MIA) is developing a number of initiatives to meet the growing demand and to encourage further innovation. Central to this strategic development is a purpose-built marine industrial park - planned to be built at Hobsonville, Waitakere City. As well as a re-fit and service cluster for Wynyard Point in Auckland City.

Marine sector snapshot

• Exports from the marine industry are expected to triple over the next fifteen years - making Marine New Zealand's largest non-primary product manufacturer
• Auckland, with three spectacular harbours, is expected to see much of this growth with the region's super yacht industry projected to increase by 424% to $619 million by 2020.
• The New Zealand Marine Industry Market Economics 2008 Report - the 2008 report forecasted marine annual turnover to increase from $1.54 billion in the year ending March 2005 to $3.16 billion by 2020 (205%).
• Super yacht construction throughout New Zealand will increase from $200.5 million in 2005 to $513 million in 2015 and $823 million in 2020 (256% and 410% respectively).
• The Marine Industry Association (MIA) is developing a number of initiatives and investment opportunities with government and local authorities.
• A project to develop a purpose-built marine industrial park at Hobsonville on the upper Waitemata Harbour has already commenced. This greenfields site has adjacent deep-water berthage and offers an exciting growth opportunity for the marine industry as a whole and new super yacht building in particular.
