Auckland is the education hub of New Zealand.The region boasts internationally acclaimed universities, innovative research institutes, top secondary schools (High Schools) and a growing number of world-class language schools - which account for 3.25% of our regional GDP and reflects our region’s multi cultural diversity.
More than 50 percent of international students are in Auckland and over 39 schools and colleges provide English language courses and training for overseas and new immigrants
The Auckland region has around 550 schools, two universities of its own, the University of Auckland and Auckland University of Technology and campuses for Massey University and Otago University. New Zealand is a world-leader in primary and secondary teaching of creativity, self-sufficiency and personal initiative.
Auckland University is rated the world's 65th-best university in the Times Higher Education Supplement's 2008 World University Rankings. There are numerous research institutes and facilities within Auckland universities and technical institutions. Funding is either through government schemes, independent organisations or companies seeking specialised assistance. Universities and institutes in Auckland have organisations tasked with either licensing intellectual property developed to interested companies or creating spin-out companies to commercialise it themselves.
Six of the eight Crown Research Institutes (CRIs) in NZ have research and development operations located in the Auckland region. Their activities cover agricultural, crop and food, horticultural, forestry, land-care, water and atmospherics, environmental science and health and industrial research.
Auckland companies, from large to small, recognise the need to remain competitive globally and nationally through innovation achieved through applied research and development. The top five subjects for research are clinical medicine, plant and animal science, chemistry, social sciences and biology and biochemistry.
Government schemes are available providing grants and funding pools to share the risks involved in these R&D projects.
