Auckland is modern and vibrant. It is the largest city region in the country and home to more than 1.4 million people. The region is recognised as the largest Polynesian city in the southern hemisphere and with an eclectic mix of culture, theatre, art and leading edge fashion Auckland provides an array of cosmopolitan experiences.
English is the main written and spoken language in New Zealand. Maori is spoken by over 4% of the population and is an officially recognised language. Commonly spoken languages aside from English and Maori include Samoan, Tongan, Cantonese, Korean, Japanese, German, French and Dutch.
Auckland is culturally diverse being home to 70% of New Zealand's immigrants and almost forty per cent of Aucklander’s were born overseas. Flows of people from the United Kingdom, the Pacific Islands, Europe, South Africa, East and South Asia and Australia not only contribute to our population growth but makes Auckland a dynamic, interesting and multi cultural place to live. There were 33, 100 permanent and long-term arrivals in the Auckland region during the year ending December 2006 representing 40 percent of all immigrants who arrived in New Zealand during that time.
The Auckland region has the highest ethnic diversity in the country.
