Digital content is a high growth sector - in Auckland its potential to increase its contribution to the economy is particularly high.
The Digital Content sector creates, designs, manages and distributes digital products and services and enabling technologies. This sector development initiative aims to support and encourage the growth of the industry in the region. Globally the industry is a high growth area - in many countries it’s expanding faster than the rest of the economy. Within it, media and entertainment spending is forecast to reach $1.8trillion by 2010 internationally, and to grow at a compound rate of over six per cent in the next few years.
The Digital Content Project is a series of programmes designed to improve collaboration, build capacity and capability and increase commercialisation. The initiative aims to attract greater international interest in Auckland’s sector which it is hoped will lead to increased investment in the region. The project will focus on appointing an advisory board and investigate the establishment of a sector body.
The initiative, administered by AucklandPlus, will invest $2.5million into sector development over two years. It is part funded by the Ministry of Economic Development, through its Enterprising Auckland Fund ($2million) and the region ($0.5million). The region’s contribution is likely to be generated through programme and membership fees and contributions from local agencies and the industry itself.
The potential economic benefits of increasing its capability extend well beyond the industry itself as most businesses use digital content. The sector itself extends well beyond the traditional high profile entertainment industries familiar to most people such as film, design, computer games, visual effects and graphic design. It includes other sectors such as HealthIT, BioTech, manufacturing and marine.
