
The Metro Project Action Plan was launched in October 2006 and takes an integrated approach to turning the vision into tangible results. It brings together existing and new regional activities into one transformational economic development plan that reflects international best practice.
The Metro Project Action Plan is not just about setting goals. It outlines 30 concrete and practical actions that will bring about tangible results and boost Auckland's performance locally and globally.
Since its launch, AucklandPlus has been facilitating the delivery objectives 3, 4 and 5 of the Action Plan. The Auckland Regional Council is responsible for facilitating objectives 1 and 2.
Developed in 2002 as part of the Auckland Regional Economic Development Strategy, the Metro Project is a plan to transform Auckland into a world-class region:
a region that successfully competes internationally, has an inclusive and dynamic economy, is buzzing with innovation, where skilled people work in world-class enterprises and is a great place to live, work and invest in.
An international team undertook a review of Auckland - their findings contributed to the development of the Metro Plan. The Metro Plan itself was developed through wide consultation with business, central, local and regional government, local economic development agencies, Maori, the migrant community and Pacific leaders. One of the major strengths of the Metro Project and the Action Plan is that they have been developed collaboratively, and are being implemented by numerous agencies and organisations across the region, rather than just one.

Implementation of the Auckland Regional Economic Development Strategy is overseen by the Auckland Regional Economic Development Forum.
Central Government’s economic transformation agenda acknowledges Auckland’s importance as a key driver of New Zealand’s economic performance. Government continues to be a significant partner is in the implementation of the Metro Project Action Plan.
