Attention generated by The Lord of the Rings, King Kong and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and local productions such as Whale Rider, The World's Fastest Indian, Number Two, River Queen and Sione's Wedding has resulted in an increase in the number of international feature films and productions being shot in New Zealand. The Screen Production Project will further enhance Auckland's popularity as a screen production location with a new state of the art sound stage, a high end training programme and an international marketing campaign promoting Auckland 's and New Zealand’s screen production capability.
Development of what is described as New Zealand’s biggest sound stage at Henderson Valley Studios is complete and the facility was officially opened by Prime Minister Helen Clark on 29 August 2007. The studio development was managed by Waitakere Properties Ltd and attracted considerable private sector investment. Prime West Limited has been formed to own the $7 million studio as well as surrounding land and other studios. The $2 million in funds from New Zealand Trade and Enterprise, contributes towards both the building, and to the industry capability and marketing programmes, which will be delivered by Film Auckland
The sound stage and increased marketing push is expected to trigger far reaching economic benefits for both Auckland and New Zealand. There will be increased employment in high value jobs within the industry; increased investment; and an opportunity to build on our current position in the global market.
