Information and communications technology

The Auckland region has produced many exciting and successful ICT business and now represents over half the industry nationally. The sector has achieved annual growth of around 5% since 1997 in Auckland and ICT now represents 5.1% of national GDP.


Auckland’s education and research sectors provide superb support for the ICT sector. With three Universities, two polytechnics and numerous private providers the ready availability of skilled graduates has enabled strong growth in the industry. In addition research from Universities and Crown Research Institutes has spawned new companies and researchers regularly collaborate with businesses.


For innovators there is a choice of technology incubators able to provide the necessary infrastructure, access to business skills and mentors and an environment designed to make their start up business successful, locally and overseas. Most notable is AUT Technology Park which is Auckland's most dynamic and collaborative venue for technological research and development, commercialisation and business incubation.

Auckland has a strong emphasis on industry driven initiatives. Auckland IT Cluster Incorporated is group established to collaborate in the development of local and export business and provides a voice for the ICT industry in New Zealand.


New Zealand offers a supportive environment to ICT firms with various government and industry initiatives underway.

  • The ICT sector provides the equivalent of 44,000 full-time jobs and includes around 8,100 New Zealand companies.
  • Most ICT businesses are small with 9% achieving annual revenues of more than $1 million New Zealand dollars.
  • The ICT sector will contribute to 10% of the NZ GDP by 2012
  • The Auckland region is home to 47% of New Zealand's computer and technology service enterprises.
