World-class infrastructure doesn’t just mean roads and wastewater, it also includes telecommunications, and the roll-out of high-speed broadband across the region is an important catalyst for stimulating Auckland’s economic and social development.
New Zealand has led the way in some areas of technology innovation, eg EFTPOS, but we have lagged behind other countries when it comes to the use of broadband.
A number of initiatives are underway to improve broadband access and speed in Auckland. Local councils, the ARC, government and the telecommunications industry are working together to bring about tangible changes to ensure all residents and business have access to fast and affordable internet services.
The Regional Economic Development Forum has recently endorsed a strategic framework that maps out what needs to be done to ensure that all businesses and residents can enjoy the benefits of what broadband has to offer, and how different agencies will work together.
AucklandPlus is facilitating the work around improved broadband infrastructure in the region and the development of the strategic framework. This work is being led by Ross Peat, chair of ICTNZ and former managing director of Microsoft New Zealand.
The Auckland Regional Advisory group has representatives from all councils in the region as well as the Ministry of Economic Development and Metro Broadband Champion, Ross Peat.
