The Metro Project Action plan reflects a widely held recognition that strengthened regional governance and a high degree of public-private sector collaboration are essential if Auckland is to successfully transform its economy.
Over the past year, the region’s eight councils have been working together with central government on a proposal to strengthen governance and decision-making across the region and in June 2007 released a report outlining a model for how this could be achieved.
The report proposes that a Regional Sustainable Development Forum be established to oversee the development and implementation of ‘One Plan’ which will promote social, economic, cultural and environmental outcomes and actions.
In July 2007, the Government announced that there will be a Royal Commission of Inquiry into local and regional governance arrangements in Auckland.
